Turkey airport staff deny fuel to El Al flight

Turkey Airport staff refuse to refuel Israel's El Al Flight after emergency landing

Israel's national carrier, El Al, faced a contentious situation when its flight from Warsaw to Tel Aviv had to make an emergency landing at Antalya airport in Turkey due to a passenger needing urgent medical attention. Despite the emergency, Turkish airport staff reportedly refused to refuel flight LY5102, prompting criticism from El Al.

Emergency landing incident

El Al stated that the aircraft, carrying a sick passenger, was denied refueling by local workers at Antalya airport, citing the reason as a medical case. The passenger was successfully evacuated, following which the plane departed for Rhodes, Greece, to refuel before continuing its journey to Israel.

The incident unfolded against a backdrop of strained relations between Turkey and Israel, exacerbated by the recent conflict in Gaza. Direct flights between the two countries have been suspended since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7.

Turkish diplomatic sources confirmed that the emergency landing was permitted for humanitarian reasons, and fuel was intended to be provided accordingly. However, El Al's statement implied that the fueling process was obstructed, leading the flight crew to depart without completion of refueling procedures.

Political context

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been vocal in his criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza, often expressing support for Hamas, the militant group governing the Gaza Strip. Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, and the European Union, initiated the conflict with an attack on southern Israel on October 7.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with hundreds killed on both sides. According to reports, the Israeli military campaign in response to Hamas's actions has led to civilian deaths in Gaza, fueling international concern and condemnation.
